Pitch Dark is a jarring narrative about a woman’s affair with a married man. Adler’s compound sentences and fractured chronology underscore the increasing pressure on the protagonist as the affair unravels. It feels less like a linear story and more like an atmosphere of anxiety (complimentary).
It actually made me think a lot about Shirley Jackson, particularly the ambiguity of danger or threats in familiar spaces. Both write with an observational clarity that is full of emotion, and it jolts the narrative forward, clenched jaw and all.
I really enjoyed it. Thanks to [@thewrittenroute](https://www.instagram.com/thewrittenroute/) for the raving review while I was filling up my library request list 🫡.
