Her narrators tell their stories like they might not be around to finish them, but never in a sloppy or rushed way. It’s an eerie style that complements these stories of Mexican women navigating a culture of seemingly inevitable violence.  The translation by Heather Cleary & Julia Sanchez is so good at capturing the style and contemporary slang of de la Cerda’s characters, and keep that narrative intentionality humming along.
