The combination of droll and mordant writing kept me captivated, but then Carrington pivots and the novel devolves into chaotic esotericism that suffocates the dramatic narrative of the first half. I think Carrington gets the benefit of the doubt as a surrealist artist, but this is an example of how surrealism can be a shield against work that just misses.
