## Annotations
Running is a big part of my life, and has been since I was a kid. Even during periods when it’s not part of my daily life, the miles and lessons influence how I approach challenges, remind me that things don’t come easy, and call me back to the sport when I need it the most. This year I’ve been back at it, and like any other time when I’ve been immersed in it, it’s hard to imagine it any other way.
I love reading about running. There are a lot of similarities between the two. Both are meditative and introspective, yet still communal and prone to an esprit de corps built on the secretive, iykyk joy each produces. The more I read, likely the less I’m running, and the inverse is equally true. I think this is because they are, for me, different ways of scratching the same itch (besides the more practical limit of hours in a day).
Nick Thompson’s memoir is about running, of course, but it’s also about how we chase our pasts and choose our future. His writing about what it feels to have that run in you is some of the truest I’ve read, and even if you’ve never ran a step in your life, you’ll recognize the importance and the struggle of bringing a life into balance.
