It reminded me of Linea Maja Ernst’s Waist Deep: both sit comfortably inside the tropey millennial novel on the surface, but Somers (like Ernst) writes with enough deftness that you find yourself suddenly recognizing the characters and situations, and having to sit with whatever that surfaces. The first pandemic-referencing novel that didn’t make me roll my eyes.
